This is an example of a well organized pack. Clothing should include extra socks, polypro T-shirts, and pants. Personal gear should include a book, medical kit, writing pad, waterproofed matches, flashlight, emergency candles, and hygienic items.

How much should a pack weigh?

The proper weight for a backpack should not exceed 25% of the Scout's body weight. To weigh the pack, step on a scale while wearing the pack, then remove the pack and weigh yourself again. The pack's weight is the difference between these two figures. The following are some typical pack weights for Scouts:

Body weight

Maximum pack weight

80 pounds 20 pounds
100 pounds 25 pounds
120 pounds 30 pounds
140 pounds 35 pounds
