| Ideally, should be a backcountry rod that breaks down into sections. I like the Eagle Claw Trailmaster II (7'6") spin-fly combo or the Eagle Claw Packit (7'6") spin-fly combo. Other excellent choices are the Shimano Stimula (6 piece, 6'6") and the South Bend Black Beauty (6'6"). |
| Spinning reel - If you take one spool, use 4 lb. test monofilament. If two spools, 4 lb. and 6 lb. test. Purchase good quality line (Sport Chalet) - don't waste your time on cheap line. | |
| Fly reel - If you know how to fly fish, you don't need any advice from me. |
| Berkeley Power Bait - I think red or rainbow glitter, orange glitter and yellow glitter work best in the backcountry. To save weight, take Power Bait out of glass bottles and put in small clear plastic Lexan jars with screw top lids (available at R.E.I. | |
| Salmon eggs - I like Pautzke's Premium or Green Label (fluorescent red). | |
| Worms. I usually don't bother with Lumbricus terrestris - too messy and they always croak in the pack. |
Lures - As a general rule, a lure in
predominantly silver or nickel finish is your overall best choice for bright sunlight.
Copper colors, or painted color combinations are best for cloudy, overcast days. Gold or
bronze fall somewhere in between as far as natural skylight conditions are concerned. In
my opinion, anything in a red and gold combination seems to work well.
| Spoons/Wobblers. Try Mepp's Syclops, Luhr Jensen Krocodile, Super Dupre, Whitman Z-Ray, Kastmaster and Thomas Buoyant, all in the 1/8 to 1/4 oz. range. | |
| Spinners - Try Mepp's, Panther Martin and Rooster Tail, all in the 1/8 to 1/4 oz. range. | |
| Plugs - I don't use these too much in the backcountry, although I know folks who do. |
| Use 2 lb. and 1 lb. |
| Treble (gold) #'s 16, 18, and 20. | |
| Worm (bronze) #'s 10, 12, and 14. | |
| Egg (gold) #'s 12, 14, and 16. |
| Water Gremlin PSS-B and PSS-BB. | |
| Egg sinkers 1/8 oz. and 1/4 oz. | |
| Pink plastic beads. |
| Clear plastic egg bubbles (water fillable). | |
| Torpedo bubbles (for using spinning reel and dry flies). |
| Disgorger. | |
| Stringer (small and nylon). | |
| Needle nose pliers. | |
| Nail clippers to cut line (or use knife/scissors). |
