About Camp Oljato - Updated 2/1/2008

Many scouts from Troop 618 have shown an interest in attending Camp Oljato this summer for week. The troop will be at Camp Oljato (session 6) the week of Sun July 27, 2008 through Sat August 2, 2008.

Camp Oljato is owned and run by the Pacific Skyline Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It is located on the shores of Huntington Lake in California's Sierra Nevada mountains at an altitude of 7,000 feet, directly across from Lakeshore CA. It is reachable only by a one-mile boat ride or a one-mile hike. The camp has 12 campsites of various sizes, with tents, platforms, running water, rest rooms, and showers. The camp can accommodate 200 Scouts, their leaders and families, along with 50 staff members. Food will be included in camp cost.

Camp Oljato provides basic scout craft instruction for newcomers, instruction and learning opportunities in a range of merit badge activities (waterfront, handicraft, nature/ecology, shooting sports, and scout craft) for intermediate Scouts, and advanced adventure opportunities for older Scouts.

Payment deadline is March 15, 2008 for the full $340.00 and we will need at least 25 scouts and 5 adults.  Payments can be made in two installments of $170.00, one by February 15th, 2008 and the second by March 15, 2008.  If my deadlines cause anyone any hardships please feel free on contacting me.  Adult leader costs may be reduced and I will update everyone know if this is the case.

Parent contact, visits, and stays

First, please understand that your scout will be living in a tent in the high Sierra for a week---he will be unreachable except for very serious family emergencies the week he is at camp. He will not have access to a telephone and will not be calling you, and you will not be calling him. (There is no cell phone coverage, and scouts may not bring electronics anyway. The staff have one telephone/fax line available for meeting all camp needs of 300 people, including logistics, housing, organizing meals.) Parents, please consider this a vacation for you too. Your scout is in good hands.

Parents may visit Camp Oljato during the day but in general do not stay overnight.  Adults leaders from the Troop618 will be staying in the campsite with the scouts. (This is a "working holiday," not a family camping trip:  Adult leaders will be busy working with our scouts to ensure a fun and safe week.)   A Class 3 medical form signed by a doctor and will cost $150.00.

There also is a Family Camp at Oljato that has a very limited number of platform-tent sites for visitors or family camping. (Family Camp does fill up quick and I recommend that you plan ahead.)  Family camp reservations need to be made directly with Camp Oljato at the number below.  Family campers pay a nominal fee for food provided by the camp.  Family campers eat at different times from the scouts and adult leaders.   A medical form completed by a physician is required. The forms and fees must be submitted by April 1, 2008.
